We were so glad that we stayed in Sheridan last night because had we continued on to Cody we would have missed a lot of beautiful scenery and encountered a treacherous drive. We left the foothills this morning around 9 and headed right up the mountains. Today we have gotten to see more wildlife - llamas, sheep, rabbits, pronghorn, and deer, and Samuel got his first experience of having his head in the clouds. (He had been so excited about this before we left saying that he was going to get some in a jar and take it home to show his friends.) We looked out ahead of us as the terrain changed from foothills and ranches to climbing the mountains with all the switchbacks. As we neared the top we were stopped by a worker for about 20 minutes. He told us that they were drilling about 100 65' holes in the mountain for dynamite today so that they could blow the side of the mountain off. He said that they needed to move the road over 30' to place the road on more solid ground because currently part of the mountain beneath the road was starting to slough off. Comforting thought as we prepared to drive over it!!
The views were amazing!! We saw snow capped mountains, rocky mountains, gorges, waterfalls, meadows, untouched snow covered fields - some of which were 3-4' deep. As you can see by our pictures we thoroughly enjoyed our drive into Cody. Nathan keeps saying he could live out here. (Yes, Buff, I think it must be a guy thing!) I love the scenery; it's gorgeous!! But I would go nuts if you dropped me off and told me I was now going to live out here. Seems to me you'd have to be a loner to survive. But I am so glad that we have made the trip to come out here to see it all!
We are staying in Cody this evening while we try to reconfigure our route for tomorrow. The road from Cody to Yellowstone is closed until May 1st, so we will probably have to head in from Montana. We'll find our way in one way or another. Meanwhile, we are staying in luxury at The Irma, Buffalo Bill Cody's hotel. We have included pictures of our suite - one that was Colonel Cody's personal suite! http://www.irmahotel.com/html/history.html Taylor was nervous about 4 men sitting not far from us at dinner because they all 4 had guns and a couple of bowie knives. One of the waitresses said that they were members of a single shot gun club and that they had revolvers from 1862, 1863, 1865, and 1972. She said that they went to church with her and she'd ask if they'd mind to show the boys their guns. They were in awe as the fellas told them about the guns. They were able to get their pictures taken with REAL cowboys! :)
