Whew! I though we would never stop last night. We finally entered Sioux (sewer) city around 1:50 a.m. (What an awful smell, we never figured out what it was.) We were intending to stay in Sioux Falls at the junction of I29 and I90, but there were no hotels. Since there were no rooms in the inn b/c there was no inn, we continued on to the next town. As it turned out the next town on I90 with hotels was actually Mitchell where we had intended to make our first stop today. So at 3:45 this morning, we finally quit driving after about 1000 miles on the road and slept in until about 8. We got around and headed for the Corn Palace. Pretty amazing to see all the work that is put into it every year! How do they keep the birds from destroying it?! Local artists have designed a new one every year since 1892! The inside hosts community activities, stage and trade shows. In the early summer workers remove the old grasses and grains. Then during the summer 3,000 bushels of milo, rye, oat heads, and sour dock are tied in bundles and attached. The corn murals have to wait until late summer when the corn is ready. Over half a million ears of corn are sawed in half and nailed to the building following patterns created by the local artists. It costs about $130,000 each year to redo this!!
Upon leaving the area we found Rita's Place Home Cooking. Nathan never knew his mom had this side business, but he is sure it's not nearly as good as hers. Next we happened upon Al's Oasis. Never knew he had this treasure tucked away up here! :)
